Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Psychic Automatism Drawing Session, 2023
The psychic automatism drawing session with music was a project I originally designed and taught at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth during Robert Motherwell's exhibition in 2023. This impactful community activity took place within one of the galleries, where participants and I engaged in a deeply focused drawing session, accompanied by a curated playlist.
Inspired by the Surrealist technique of automatic drawing, Motherwell, who himself wasn’t a Surrealist, used this technique during his art-marking process. His approach to abstract painting, particularly his use of black and white to explore themes of existence, resonates deeply with my work.
During the session, 20 participants joined me for an hour of immersive art-making. We produced 12 automatic drawings using materials like graphite pencils, charcoal sticks, and colored oil pastels. The carefully selected playlist enhanced the meditative quality of the exercise, transporting us into a creative flow. This activity not only encouraged intuitive art-making but also demonstrated the transformative power of art in a communal setting.
